Second Grade Art Class
Color Basics
Students practiced color mixing by creating color wheels that had primary and secondary colors. Students then talked about color families (tints, shades, etc) and looked at the work of artist Wassily Kandinksy. Students practiced color mixing color families by creating Kandinksy circles. You might have seen a wall of these outside of the main office!
Community Quilts
2nd grade artists looked at the work of Faith Ringgold and read her book Tar Beach. Students then discussed how artists use the idea of community as inspiration to make art. We analyzed the story quilts of Faith Ringgold and identified how they told stories of time and place. Students then created their own story quilt that told the story of what they did in their community. After completing the drawing we discussed how math is used in the art of quilt making and we created a patterned symmetrical border using a variety of geometric shapes.
Self Portraits
We looked at the work of artist Frida Kahlo and read a book about her life. Students "read" one of her paintings and discussed the various symbols within the work. Students then used mirrors to draw self portraits from observation. Once the portraits were drawn, students used a wax resist process and chalk pastels to add color to their work.
