Fairy Doors
5th grade students looked at the famous fairy doors of Ann Arbor Michigan and discussed the art elements and principles within each example. We discussed how the fairy doors usually shares similarities with the design of the regular sized door of each building. Students read an article about the tradition of fairy houses (how fairy doors started) which started in the state of Maine back in the 1800's.
Students then created two fairy door sketches and used colors, patterns, and designs to demonstrate what type of fairy door it is. Students then collaged wood pieces onto their door bases to created relief within their doors. Students then transferred the designs from their sketch onto their final doors and painted them. Students were also encouraged to bring in found materials that related to their door design. Students then created an artist statement describing the features of their door and we had a partnered art critique. Students also chose a space within the school to display their fairy doors in hopes the fairies would come to Peck School.
