Students learned about Henri Matisse's life and artwork. Henri was part of a group called the Fauves which literally meant wild beast! Which is how many art critics saw his work. Henri just wanted to be different! We looked at his specific work titled, "The Lady in the Purple Coat" and discussed what made it different from a realistic painting. We practiced how to create a proportional figure, created a corner of our own filled with pattern, and practiced the burnishing technique using oil pastels. We even learned about warm and cool colors and practiced using them in our rooms. Finally we cut our self portraits out and placed them into our room corner.
