Monster Masks
The 3rd graders learned about masks from Mexico and discussed the formal elements of mood, color, line, pattern, and symmetry. Students compared and contrasted the similarities and differences of line, shape, color, mood, and pattern within two masks from mexico. Students also learned about symmetry and what makes something symmetrical and asymmetrical. Students then created a sketch of a mask that uses line, pattern, and color.
Students used the process of collage to create a mask using their sketches as a guide. Students learned that collage is an art process that involves cutting paper and gluing it together to create something new. When the students completed their masks, we discussed what an artist statement is and the students created artist statements describing their masks and the process they went through while creating their work. We also talked about critiques in art and had a class critique or "art walk" where we walk around the room to other groups and view all the projects then share our favorite projects as a class, making sure we describe why they are our favorite.
