First Grade Art Class
First Grade artists were very busy this year.
We started the second half of the year by talking about color and focused on the primary and secondary colors. Students participated in centers and practiced color mixing, analyzed the artwork of Mondrian and Matisse, and created some amazing art along the way.
Next, we talked about how color can be used to show mood in art work. Students looked at various Mexican celebration masks and analyzed the colors and moods of each mask. Students then created their own masks used color to depict mood.
Lastly, students learned about Cave art and discussed the images within cave art. Students talked about process, materials, and content. Students then created their own drawing on "stone" in a dark "cave" like room to gain an understanding of what it was like for the cave men to make art.
After discussing cave art, we talked about tools and students used clay to create pinch pots. We discussed how this process relates to Cave art and presented our pots to the class.
