Eighth Grade Art
Lenticular Self Portraits
Students were instructed to create a realistic black and white self portrait through study of grid design. Students practiced using mathematical problem solving by enlarging a 4 x 5 photograph onto an 8 x 10 drawing. Students practiced shading and adding details to their self portrait using pencils, ebony pencils, and kneaded erasers. Next students were instructed to create a second self portrait that represented themselves using iconic imagery, color, and representation without actually drawing their physical appearance. They practiced expressing themselves through abstract drawing, collage, and mixed media. Last students practiced creative problem solving through construction of their art piece. They combined both art works through lenticular build.

Georgia O’Keefe Painting: Man’s Influence on Nature
Students began this project by studying examples of Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings. They then brainstormed their own nature inspirations using technology to help them ‘zoom’ in on their object. Students were able to create a color wheel by mixing paint and were even encouraged to invent their own colors. Once finished painting their nature image, students painted their hand physically into their painting signifying man’s impression on the naturalistic world today.
