Patterned Animal Drawings
Th focus for this Unit was to discuss the Art Element of Pattern and introduce students to the art process of sculpture.
To start the unit, I read the book "Elmer The Elephant" to the students, which is about an elephant who is not regular elephant color but patchwork. While reading we discussed different patterns within the book and what lines, shapes, and colors the patterns consisted of. We then talked about different types of patterns such as A patterns, AB patterns, and ABC patterns. I then showed the students patterns I created by using symbols for some of my favorite things. Students then created two original patterns using symbols of things they like.
Students then chose an animal to draw and I demonstrated how to draw animals by breaking them up into shapes. Students then created a sketch of their animal using the same drawing process I demonstrated. The next step of the project is for the students to create an animal sculpture using clay and then covering the animal with an original pattern. We also focused on vocabulary throughout this lesson, some new words the students learned were; form, 3-D, 2-D, and sculpture.
