Patterned Animal Drawings
Th focus for this Unit was to discuss the Art Element of Pattern and introduce students to the art process of drawing.
To start the unit, I read the book "Elmer The Elephant" to the students, which is about an elephant who is not regular elephant color but patchwork. While reading we discussed different patterns within the book and what lines, shapes, and colors the patterns consisted of. We then talked about different types of patterns such as A patterns, AB patterns, and ABC patterns. I then showed the students patterns I created by using symbols for some of my favorite things. Students then created two original patterns using symbols of things they like.
Students then chose an animal to draw and I demonstrated how to draw animals by breaking them up into shapes. Students then created a sketch of their animal using the same drawing process I demonstrated. The next step of the project is for the students to create a final animal drawing using oil pastels and large white paper. Students will then fill their animal with one of the original patterns they created. The animals will then be cut out and placed together in an "Elmer Day Parade" which is discussed in the book "Elmer the Elephant."
