Community Symbols
Students looked at the work of artist Bernard Williams and analyzed how he uses symbol and silhouette to create stories about various communities in Chicago. Students then discussed what they thought was valued, specific, and essential to their community.
Students then chose their favorite ideas from each of the 3 categories and created a symbol to visually describe their chosen ideas. Students then used black paper to create silhouettes of their ideas. When students completed their symbols, the work was hung together as a class and critiqued by the students. Overall we found that family and education were valued in the community, midway airport was specific to the community, and homes and people were essential to the community.
